It sounds too personal, too therapy-adjacent for a job decision. But for the professionals I work with, it usually turns out to be the most accurate career advice they&#8217;ve heard in years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Mask You Didn&#8217;t Know You Were Wearing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nobody sets out to build a career around a mask. It happens gradually: you&#8217;re good at something, people reward you for it, the path opens up, and you take it \u2014 long before you&#8217;ve asked whether it&#8217;s actually you. Somewhere along the way, competence gets mistaken for calling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Picture it concretely:<\/strong> you&#8217;re excellent at your job. Reliable, respected, well-compensated. And still, some quiet part of you treats Monday morning like a costume you put on. That gap \u2014 between what you&#8217;re good at and what you actually want \u2014 is rarely a performance problem. It&#8217;s a mask problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One client of mine had spent a decade climbing toward a VP title \u2014 the promotions kept coming, so he kept saying yes. By the time he got there, he realized he&#8217;d built an entire career around being the reliable one, and had never once asked what he&#8217;d choose if reliability wasn&#8217;t the assignment. The title wasn&#8217;t wrong. It just wasn&#8217;t his.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why &#8220;Becoming Who You Are&#8221; Is Harder Than It Sounds<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So many people spend their whole lives trying to be what others, or society, expects: the safe degree, the sensible next title, the version of success that photographs well at family gatherings. None of it is dishonest, exactly \u2014 it&#8217;s just borrowed. And borrowed goals are exhausting to sustain, because you&#8217;re not running on your own reasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The real work, at a certain point, becomes shedding the lies and the masks \u2014 remembering who you were before the world told you who to be. That&#8217;s not a dramatic reinvention. It&#8217;s closer to subtraction than addition: fewer performances, more honesty about what actually matters to you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Inner Liberation Actually Looks Like in a Career<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This isn&#8217;t an argument for quitting everything and &#8220;following your passion&#8221; \u2014 that framing has burned enough people already. It&#8217;s smaller and more useful than that: noticing, one decision at a time, which choices are actually yours and which ones are inherited. It starts small \u2014 which meeting you speak up in, which project you volunteer for, which &#8220;yes&#8221; you let slip out on autopilot \u2014 and it compounds. Before any of that gets easier, there&#8217;s one question worth sitting with:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"niv-pullquote wp-block-paragraph\">What would you choose here if nobody&#8217;s expectations were in the room?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That single question, asked honestly at the next fork in the road, tends to surface more clarity than another round of pros-and-cons lists.
