Too unhappy to stay. Sound familiar?

Your salary feels like security and a golden cage at the same time

Your real hourly wage is often lower than you think — once you count honestly

A 10-minute calculation shows you the actual price you’re paying right now

Less salary with better quality of life can be a higher value, not a step back

The Feeling Most People Know

“I can’t actually afford to leave” — I hear some version of this almost weekly, usually from people who’ve done everything right on paper. Good salary, good position, security for the family.

And at the same time:

The sense of being “paid for” the salary, not just paid

The assumption that a change is simply not financially possible

The quiet question: how much am I actually willing to pay to keep this salary?

This isn’t ingratitude. It’s a math error. You’re calculating with the wrong number.

The Calculation: Your Real Hourly Wage, 10 Minutes

Step 1 — The denominator. Annual salary divided by (weeks × actual weekly hours). Not contracted hours — real ones. Commute time, evening emails, weekend mental load all count.

Commute time alone is usually left out entirely: according to Destatis/Eurostat, professionals in Germany commute an average of 26 minutes one-way — over 4 hours a week that no job listing ever mentions.

Beispiel: €85,000 annual salary, officially 40 hours, but realistically closer to 58 hours a week with commuting, emails, and rumination → roughly €28/hour for your life.

One honest caveat: this number doesn’t yet include what your employer covers on top — in Germany, roughly half of your health insurance, pension, and unemployment insurance contributions come from your employer, not you. A freelancer’s rate has to cover all of that alone, so a direct comparison isn’t quite fair. Even accounting for that, the question underneath stays the same.

Step 2 — The question. Would you pay €28/hour to keep going like this?

Most people hesitate. The hesitation is the real answer — not the number itself.

What the Number Reveals

Your real hourly wage — usually lower than assumed once the invisible hours are counted

The hidden costs — time, energy, quality of life that never show up in the gross salary

The actual priority question — what is this really worth to you?

Two Assumptions That Don’t Hold Up

“I’d have to sacrifice 30–50% of my salary” — not necessarily; your value is often in demand elsewhere too

“Nobody else will pay me this well” — usually a radius problem, not a market problem: you just don’t know the markets that would pay yet

What the calculation doesn’t give you: the answer on whether a change is right. It only gives you the honest starting number.

You’ve been asking whether you can afford to change. Wrong question. The number above is what it’s already costing you not to.

Ein Muster aus der Praxis

A client — let’s call him Markus, 44, team lead in an industrial company — had avoided this calculation for a long time. It was only when his wife asked why he’d started sleeping badly on Sunday nights that he sat down and did the math. “I didn’t actually want to know the number,” he said later — which was exactly why he’d never calculated it. The result: €24/hour, on a salary that looked very good on paper.

He didn’t quit right away. But the number changed how he talked about his options — from “I can’t afford this” to “what is this difference actually worth to me?”

Composite example from recurring patterns in practice, not a real individual.

What This Means for You

A lower number than expected isn’t a reason to quit — it’s a basis for setting priorities deliberately instead of automatically. If you’ve been avoiding the calculation, that avoidance is itself a signal. And if a change feels financially impossible, that’s usually a radius assumption, not a market reality — the first step is finding out what your profile is worth elsewhere, not handing in your notice.

Häufig gestellte Fragen

Does a low hourly wage mean I should quit my job — and what if there’s nothing I can do about it?
Neither. It’s an honest number, not an instruction, and a low number was never a life sentence — it’s information you didn’t have five minutes ago. Some people close the gap by reducing overtime or setting clearer boundaries; others find their profile is worth more elsewhere than they assumed. What you do with the number is a separate, later decision.

Isn’t this just a rough back-of-envelope number?
It doesn’t replace real financial planning. But it surfaces a number most people never calculate, because the gross salary alone gives an incomplete picture.

If the number above isn’t really the problem — if you’d be fine with your salary but something else feels off — Successful But Unhappy at Work? looks at that gap instead.

I’m Niv Nicolas Nowbakht, career and business coach based in Berlin and Barcelona.
